A Thanksgiving Spent Outdoors

The Holiday season has found us once again, cue the comfort food and family time. As we embark on the last and busiest two months of the year it is important to remember to slow down and enjoy time with those we love. After spending the Holiday outdoors last year and the simplicity that comes with casual outdoor dining, we are back this year with another guide on how to make the most of an afternoon spent dining outside the formal dining room.

If there is one thing to love about dining in the outdoors, it's the simplicity and laid-back ambience of setting the table outside. Decorations are less of the focus as the fresh air is plenty refreshing. Light some candles, lay out your low fuss place settings, and add a fresh cut vase of flowers. Ta-da! Your table is set. Read along for classic recipes, table settings and lounge area inspiration.

Simple and chic.

This table setting sourced from Instagram features bestselling pieces from the Provence Collection. A Collection that is guaranteed as timeless and ready for many years of outdoor dining enjoyment. With simple styling you can easily achieve a truely classic look. Below we picked the perfect recipe to pair with this table setting, old-fashioned garlic mashed potatoes, sure to be a crowd favorite for Thanksgiving Day.

Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes

A coastal Holiday.

Jettset Farmhouse knows a thing or two about southern decorating, add a screened-in porch for that Florida heat and this dining setting is 100% foolproof. Featuring pieces from both the Havana and Coastal Teak Collection's, this picture perfect porch will surely please the family. In true Southern fashion, we added a 5 star green bean casserole recipe that everyone will love, even the kids!

Comfort food, comfort clothes & comfort club chairs.

Once the food-coma sets it, it's time to retreat from the table and find yourself a comfortable chair to relax in. As shown below, the Venice Club Chair situated around a sleek fire table is the ideal place to spend the next couple hours chatting with family members and just maybe catching a few z's too. We always look forward to the Holiday season, as time spent with friends and family is something to be thankful for. As 2021 winds down we recall upon how busy of a year it has been, and are reminded of what an incredible support system we have. We thank you all for your patience and understanding and wish you a comfortable and relaxing Holiday with your loved ones.

The 2022 Colors of the Year

It's that time of year again! As Sherwin-Williams, Behr, Valspar and more release their picks for the 2022 Color of The Year, we are already dreaming up the endless possibilities to bring these new shades into our life.

Here's the line-up so far and how we plan to incorporate them into our own #SWstyle.

1. Sherwin-Williams, Evergreen Fog.

Evergreen Fog applied to the exterior of an home by Sherwin-Williams.

As one of the most highly anticipated Color of The Year releases, Sherwin-Williams is considered an industry leader in their trend setting decisions. This year they chose Evergreen Fog as the 2022 color, a softer and more subtle hue in comparison to the bright and vibrant jewel-tone shades of the past. Everything about this color exudes rest and relaxation, and we are here for it.

Incorporating this color into your existing interior or exterior living space is almost effortless, blending seamlessly with almost any of our Sunset West collections for a completely fresh and inspiring transition into The New Year. Here are our top product picks that we think would look the best when paired with this color.

Pietra Club Chair in Sunbrella Canvas Spa, see full collection here.

Redondo Club Chair in Sunbrella Canvas Spa, see full collection here.

2. Valspar and 12 nature-inspired hues.

Lilac Lane, Mountain River, and Blanched Thyme by Valspar.

Instead of committing to just one color, Valspar released an entire color palette for 2022, all drawing inspiration from the outdoors. These options allow you to mix and match and incorporate as many or as few options into your life as you would like. Personally, we love the Grey Suit, Subtle Peach and Fried Earth, all which can be viewed here. With endless opportunities to style these colors with Sunset West collections, here are our top two product choices.

Bristol Club Chair, see full collection here.

Vegas Club Chair, see full collection here

3. Breezeway by Behr.

Breezeway by Behr applied to a front door.

Talk about a fresh breeze, this might be a personal favorite when it comes to the 2022 Color of The Year options. Behr describes this shade as "a relaxed and uplifting sea glass green expressing peace and tranquility for forward movement", something we all could use a little bit of after another busy year. Styling this color is just as effortless as it looks, here is what we suggest.

Dana Wing Chair in Sunbrella Dupione Celeste, see full collection here.

Havana Club Chair in Sunbrella Dupione Celeste, see full collection here.

4. Guacamole by Glidden.

Guacamole by Glidden, because who doesn't love avocados?

Unexpected but surprisingly playful, this fresh green is inspired by - yup, you guessed it, guacamole! Turns out this color can be more than just your favorite food. Glidden describes this color as having "organic energy" and balances bold with calm. We love a good design challenge, and this color choice offers plenty of opportunity for creative curating. Here is what we would pair with this color.

Laguna Club Chair in Sunbrella Canvas Fern, see full collection here.

Monterey Club Chair in Sunbrella Canvas Spa, see full collection here.

With endless options to start off The New Year fresh, we look forward to adjusting our interior and exterior living spaces to feature new trends and Colors of The Year while keeping a classic look.

Casual Market Chicago September 2021 Recap

Last week Sunset West welcomed visitors to our showroom at Casual Market Chicago for the September 2021 show.

During the Market, we showcased new 2021 introductions, including the already popular Redondo curved sofa. The showroom space houses best sellers, including Sunset West legacy pieces and some rising stars from recently introduced lines. We also had the opportunity to meet with existing customers and partners to discuss the many challenges facing our industry, taking the time to celebrate influential industry members, as well as the unsung heroes and our incredibly important support and Customer Service staff.

The new for 2021 Redondo Curved Sofa styled with the Milano Armless Club Chair and Round Pouf from The Bazaar.

The theme for the week was grounded in a mutual thanks for everyone's support as the industry continues down a rocky road. Taking the time to connect with these individuals re-installed many people's confidence and support for each other as we endure through these uncertain times together.

The Bali Fire Bowl looks even better in real life! Styled with the Dana Collection wing club chair, end table and club chair.

With the fall season underway and only a short few months to go until 2022, we are excited to navigate the ever-changing industry with a solid support team and community of retailer's and designer's who trust in us as much as we trust in them.

Thank you for reading along and keeping up with industry news. We are already looking forward to connecting with you at the next Chicago Market!

Las Vegas Market Recap, August 2021

Last week Sunset West welcomed visitors to our refreshed showroom at Las Vegas Market for the Summer 2021 show.

At this Market, we unveiled installations featuring new product additions and another giveaway for market-goers to enter. We spent the week catching up with industry friends who didn't attend the last Market and sharing excitement for what the future of the industry holds.

Read along to hear what the industry professionals who visited us at Market are saying as well as browse the new installations we featured in our showroom.

A Conversation with All American Outdoor Living

All American Outdoor Living, a three-location brick and mortar chain in Arizona, stays true to its roots. As a prominent retailer since 1973 and multi-generational family operation, they’ve weathered the tides of the changing industry. They believe the most important room in the house is the patio and first discovered Sunset West after a longtime customer requested a specific product they didn’t carry - they now feature five collections on their showroom floors, the Redondo collection being the crowd favorite. In a quick chat with Todd, we discussed trends, the future of the furniture business, and what it takes to stay relevant in an industry being turned upside down by the progression of e-commerce and social media. The All American Outdoor Living outlook on the situation is simple, staying true to who they are as a retailer and the value they provide to their customer which is offering that irreplaceable customer experience. When we asked Todd what he likes most about Sunset West he answered “Sunset West offers unique, fresh, forward thinking but trend friendly product that is easy for retailers to sell’.

Catching up with Kimberly Kay Interiors

Kimberly is based out of Phoenix, Arizona which also happens to be the number one fastest growing city in the USA right now. We sat down with her for a couple of minutes at Market to hear more about the Arizona design scene, what customers are buying, and her favorite design projects. Kimberly keeps her style classic with a little touch of coastal, bringing a refreshing breeze to the 365-day sun and Arizona heat. She recently ordered the Havana collection for her own home but loves introducing her clients to the Sunset West rope collections, Milano being her absolute favorite. She prides herself on the customer service she provides to her clients as she rings in her fifth year of business. In the coming weeks, she will be conducting a photo shoot at a recent Manhattan Beach project featuring the Milano collection and we can’t wait to see the photos, give her a follow at @kimberlykayinteriors on Instagram for more projects featuring Sunset West collections.

The center of attention: featuring the new Pedestal Dining Table in bone and Dana Dining Chairs.

Modern contrast: featuring the Redondo Club Chair, Milano Sofa and accent tables from The Bazaar.

Round daybeds: New round daybeds debuted at Market for their first appearance including the Havana daybed pictured here, as well as the Miami rope and Farro wicker daybeds.

We are already planning for Winter Market 2022, with big plans in place for a full showroom swap and new product additions. We hope to see you there!

Al Fresco Living, Phoenix Style, with Caroline Cecil Textiles

Calling Arizona home, textile designer, Caroline Cecil enjoys her outdoor living spaces for the majority of the year. We recently worked with Caroline to finish up their Veranda, where her family spends most of their time.

Read along to see the finished product of Caroline's vision and for a brief interview to learn more about Sunset West. Visit Caroline Cecil Textiles, here.

 Shop the Laguna collection, here.

  Shop the Dana collection, here.

From the interview with Caroline Cecil:

Caroline: Tell us a little bit about Sunset West, the history, and your mission.

Sunset West: For over 16 years, Sunset West has been committed to bringing exceptional furnishings to the outdoor contemporary market with comfort, style, and quality in mind.  Founded in Southern California by CEO Wes Stewart, Sunset West carries on a family legacy in fine furnishings that dates back to his grandmother. With impeccable attention to detail in construction, the team at Sunset West embraces and delivers on the same culture of excellence in execution - using only premium materials and handcrafting our product for exceptional outdoor living that truly feels like an extension of the home.

You sell exclusively to the interior design trade, and to wholesale accounts. Tell us a little bit about being a trade-only business.

Being in luxury outdoor furniture, much like any other high-end purchase, requires a concierge experience for the customer. We work with interior designers and knowledgeable specialty stores and showrooms to guide the consumer on their purchase for their home.

Obviously in this day and age, wholesale and to-the-trade looks quite a bit different - while we still offer a boutique-like service to our designers and partners with custom fabrication, sampling, and training, we are now in an age where our trade partners need digital tools and easy access to the brands in their arsenal. We have been listening to our designers and their wants and needs, and have been hard at work to develop new tools, and make information easily accessible to grow with them and their businesses.

As a west coast brand, do you find that most of your customers are in California? What locations are your best sales territories?

With our roots here in Socal, a large portion of our early business was certainly local, and California continues to be a huge market for us. That being said, we have expanded in the last 15 years tremendously into every major market in the US, as well as across borders into Canada and Mexico. Because we are able to offer a wide range of materials and styles from traditional to contemporary, we appeal to many buyers in all regions and climates. We continue to see success along the West coast and Southwest, as well as Florida, with exciting new growth throughout the Midwest and East coast thanks to our friendly Freight programs. The Sunbelt states in particular are a strong region for us - where you’ll find better weather, an increased demand for outdoor living and spike in new outdoor kitchens. The outdoor great room is now the ultimate luxury item, and homeowners want to replicate the look and comfort of their indoor space in their backyards (something we’ve been preaching in California for years with our quintessential indoor/outdoor lifestyle).

Do you sell mostly to domestic or international clients?

Mostly domestic, although we do have a growing presence in both Canada and Mexico, with some very exciting recent hospitality projects across the border!

Which trade shows do you all attend, do you have any coming up where designers can view your collections?

We have a permanent 5,000 sq ft showroom in Las Vegas where we will show during Las Vegas Market twice a year, and is the best representation of the full breadth of our line. In addition, we have a permanent showroom located in the Mart in Chicago that is open year-round to the trade.

Can you list a few projects where designers have used Sunset West furniture?

Some of our recent favorite projects include the gorgeous spanish-influenced exterior space of the ‘Holas Olas’ project by Denise Morrison Interiors, the ‘Ashton’ project by Holly Robinson Interior Concepts which showcases a beautiful creative curation of styles from a few different collections, and we have really been loving the tropical Rosewood Resort exterior space by Progressive Design Firm.

Is there anything unique about your furniture design or production process?

There is a hand-made element to every piece of furniture. Whether it be the brushed look on the aluminum frames, the woven rope frames or the Sunbrella cushions. One very special aspect is definitely the cushions though. Once the furniture frames reach our warehouse, all the cushions are hand-sewn with Sunbrella fabric in house. Our sewing team is made up of highly-skilled women that finish up the process by sewing the Sunset West and Sunbrella tags on the cushions, which is the very last step before the furniture is then wrapped and packaged.  It definitely puts a special touch to each piece of furniture that goes out our door.

What are the key elements that set your furniture apart?

Quality, style, and execution - we begin by developing fresh yet timeless designs, then source only premium materials from all over the globe, to create furnishings that are as durable as they are beautiful. We approach design with the sense of creative curation - crafting comprehensive color stories that allow designers to mix and match collections, styles, and materials, for a truly high-design and curated look.

Just as important is comfort - once you pass the ‘eye test,’ furniture needs to pass the ‘butt test’ (this is a classic industry term ;) ). It is hard to define scale and proportion, but you know it when you see it, and feel it - seat height and depth, pitch and radius of a back - these are all crucial to crafting beautiful and comfortable pieces.

I absolutely love our sofa which is part of your Laguna Collection. What interior aesthetic do you think it fits best within?

The Laguna is one of our best selling collections all across the US because it is a wonderfully versatile look - we call it transitional, but this collection can be paired with so many different styles. The hand-brushed finish in a neutral driftwood, clean lines, and curved ladder back create a beautiful look adaptable to most any space. And with customized cushions, this group is a true chameleon - fabrics in a bright solid or interesting pattern can take this look in so many directions.

Tell us about your Dana Collection, which is beautifully constructed of rope and other materials. What inspired this collection?

This collection in particular was inspired by macrame weaving techniques with the rise in popularity of woven goods and rope in furniture. Dana is as beautiful as it is durable - each piece is woven with all-weather rope completely by hand by skilled artisans, over a rust free powder coated frame.

What’s next for Sunset West?

The Pandemic has caused a major boom in the furniture industry, and really highlighted some of the modern day needs of the trade - pushing us towards creating new digital tools and resources for our designers and wholesale partners. Internally, we have been working for over a year to launch a new system that will speed up order processing, allow designers to place orders online, get inventory and lead time information, and access other brand assets. Our website will be more interactive, with new customization and 3d features as well to bring the custom side of our business to life.

We also want to highlight our trade partners after such an incredible year, and are launching a ‘Designer Series’ tailored towards celebrating the Interior Designers that we get to work with and the gorgeous projects they complete.

Trends are always changing, and on the horizon for next season we are working on introducing some exciting designs that celebrate the ethos of extraordinary indoor outdoor living… stay tuned!

Go For A New Grilling Recipe.

Our friends over at BBQ Guys know their stuff when it comes to cooking out on the grill. One recipe on our radar this summer is the stuffed sweet mini pepper appetizer from their blog, linked here! Described as "hot, juicy and sweet" - it sounds like the perfect easy appetizer to kick off the grilling season with. With a 10 minute prep time, and 1 hour and 20 minute cook time - this is the perfect app to dish up while chatting with friends and family, enjoying the outdoors!

What you'll need:

  • 20 sweet mini peppers
For the Stuffing:
  • 1 lb ground chuck
  • 4 bacon strips, thick-cut
  • 1 yellow onion
  • 12 cups water
  • 2 cups brown rice
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 yellow bell pepper
  • 1–2 pinches coarse salt
  • 1–2 pinches black pepper
  • ½ tsp white pepper
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 cloves minced garlic, fresh
  • ¼ bunch parsley
  • 8 oz goat cheese, crumbled

Directions:

  1. Bring a large pot of water to boil, using about 6 cups water per 1 cup rice. Under running water, rinse the rice in a colander to remove excess starch; this will keep the end result from coming out thicker and gloopier than you’d want to stuff those peppers.
  2. Gently slip the rice into the boiling water, then lower the temperature as necessary to prevent it flowing over. You’ll want the rice to maintain a steady boil. Boil, uncovered, for about half an hour.
  3. As the water boils, bisect 20 mini peppers long ways and scoop out thepiths and seeds — if you happen to have one laying around, a serrated grapefruit spoon really speeds this task right up.
  4. Drain off the remaining water, then return the rice to the pot. Cover the pot and let the rice rest, off the heat, for 10 minutes before fluffing it. Set the rice aside — but don’t you worry. We’re about to make great use of it.
  5. Bring a large sauté pan to medium heat. Introduce the ground chuck and bacon to that pan, then brown them until nearly cooked through. Drain the rendered fat and excess oil, then return the pan to the burner.
  6. Add the onion and the regular bell peppers, then continue sautéing until caramelized.
  7. Drop the fire to medium-low heat. Add the salt, black and white pepper, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, cooked brown rice, and chopped parsley. Continue cooking for another 2–3 minutes; allow the flavors to blend and meld together.
  8. Remove from the fire and allow mixture to cool for 10 minutes before transferring it to the bowl of a food processor. Lightly pulse everything a few times until it resembles a very coarse meal. This will help everything pack well and stay together when stuffing.
  9. Pour everything into a large mixing bowl, then begin folding in crumbled goat cheese until well-incorporated and dispersed throughout the stuffing.
  10. If you are preparing the peppers immediately, this is a great time to preheat your grill. Set it up for direct medium-high heat. Now, if you’d rather finish preparing them in the next two days — any longer than that is just asking for poor results — you can now wrap the pan tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Simply remove the pan from the refrigerator, allowing it to warm upabout 20 minutes before grilling.
  11. Use a tablespoon to generously stuff each pepper. And we do mean generously. Try to over-stuff these bad boys until the stuffing peeks out roughly a quarter-inch over the cut edge of the pepper.
  12. Grill the peppers for a few minutes, stuffed side up. You’re looking for char marks to appear on the bottom of the peppers. Remove those tasty stuffed peppers, plate them on a large platter, and serve immediately!

Looking for more of a main dish? Try the grilled shrimp po-boy with remoulade sauce by Chef Tony Matassa of ShoppersChoice.com.

  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp coarse salt
  • 1 Tbsp coriander
  • 1 Tbsp drained & chopped capers
  • 1/2 tsp granulated sugar

Creole Seasoning Blend: (Makes Approximately 1 Cup)
  • 3 Tbsp roasted garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp onion powder
  • 3 Tbsp dry basil
  • 2 Tbsp dry thyme
  • 3 Tbsp dry oregano
  • 2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 3 Tbsp paprika
  • 2 Tbsp dry rubbed sage
  • 1 Tbsp dry lemon peel

Directions:

  1. Peel and de-vein 2 lbs of colossal shrimp, set aside in fridge while you mix up the marinade.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mix together ingredients for marinade.
  3. Add shrimp to marinade and toss to coat well.
  4. Set in fridge and allow them to marinade 30 minutes to an hour, while you mix up the remoulade sauce.
  5. In a mixing bowl, add mayonnaise, followed by Worcestershire, lemon juice, hot sauce and Dijon mustard. Whisk everything together well.
  6. Add remaining ingredients to remoulade and whisk everything together.
  7. Transfer remoulade sauce to serving dish and set in fridge until ready to serve.
  8. Remove shrimp from refrigerator and preheat grill to medium heat.
  9. Place shrimp on preheated grill and allow them to cook about 2 minutes per side. The shrimp are done cooking when they have turned opaque.
  10. Remove shrimp and lightly tent with foil.
  11. Halve French bread and brush on olive oil. Grill for a few seconds to toast bread.
  12. Assemble Po-boy with homemade remoulade sauce, fresh sliced tomatoes, butter lettuce, and grilled shrimp.
  13. Slice 12-inch Po-boys in half, serve, and enjoy!

We are looking forward to lots more of this throughout the new season. So stay tuned for more summer recipes and dining inspiration!

Las Vegas Market Recap, April 2021

Las Vegas Market Recap, April 2021

Last week the Las Vegas Market commenced for 2021 with safe Coronavirus practices in place. Market turnout was uncertain, but over the course of the 5 day event we experienced a pleasant amount of visitors to the permanent Sunset West Showroom in Building B.

With a higher attendance than expected our showroom was left feeling truly lived-in, as visitors mingled, browsed the 2021 new introductions, and snapped photos for the Hanging Chair Giveaway. Popular moments from the April show include the Coronado + Coastal Teak curated design, a full installment of the Frost Pergola housing the Miami Collection and a Fire Table, and the People's Choice Award Design of Dana + Coastal Teak - which was spotlighted at the front entrance to the showroom. See photos below.

With August 2021 Market right around the corner, we are expecting another successful turnout. As we prepare for a busy summer and look forward to the outdoor season - we hope you too stay healthy, enjoy the outdoors, and visit us at Market in August!

Jettset Farmhouse

For those who reside in year round warm climates, outdoor living is a huge part of everyday home life. Noell Jett, of the blog Jettset Farmhouse, shows us firsthand how she maximized her outdoor living spaces to best enjoy her Florida home with her family.

The Jettset Farmhouse, a project that Noell and her husband took on as a completely hand-built custom home from the ground up, features three main outdoor living areas for her family to enjoy.  Noell carefully selected a mix of natural teak and rustic Havana resin wicker for her space in keeping with her characteristic fresh farmhouse style. A screened in dining area (with a beautiful and functional pass-through window), and an outdoor lounge area set next to a pond complete this couple's dream family home.

Home in the Trees
